Travis Johnson hit a first-inning grand slam and the Methodist baseball team posted a 10-6 win at Lynchburg College on Wednesday afternoon.
The Monarchs (15-17) scored six runs in the first inning as Lynchburg (16-13) starter James Womack was able to record just two outs. MU loaded the bases on three consecutive walks to lead off the game and scored the first run of the contest with one out on a wild pitch.
Tyler Younger then struck out, but was able to take first on a wild pitch and
Stephen Nalls followed with an RBI single. Johnson then came to bat and blasted his first collegiate home run, a grand slam to left, that chased Womack and gave the Monarchs a 6-0 lead.
Reid Goss replaced Womack and promptly reloaded the bases before getting
Steven Kirby to pop out to end the inning.
The Hornets answered with two runs in the bottom of the first on RBI base hits by Brock Shiflett and Jay Kenyon to pull within four runs at 6-2. Methodist scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to extend its lead to 8-2 before LC plated four unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth, to pull within a pair of runs at 8-6.
However, the Monarchs tacked on insurance runs in the sixth and ninth innings to put the Hornets away.
Daniel Royer was credited with the win, he started and allowed two runs on three hits with one strikeout in 2.0 innings. Six MU relievers combined to allow four runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts to close out the game.
Womack finished with a line of six runs allowed on two hits and three walks with one strikeout in 0.2 innings.
Johnson finished 2-for-5 with four RBIs and a run scored for the Monarchs.
Chris Power was 2-for-5 and scored twice, while Cody Molsoky was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
Joe Rogers led Lynchburg, finishing 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Kenyon was 2-for-2 with an RBI an a run scored.
The Monarchs will now host Greensboro in a three-game set this weekend. The series kicks off with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 3:00 pm.
