Tippett Propels Methodist Softball to Doubleheader Sweep of N.C. Wesleyan

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The Methodist softball team posted a 9-1 win in game one followed by a 4-2 win in game two earn a doubleheader sweep of N.C. Wesleyan on Saturday at Edge Field.
 
Jessica Farmer allowed just one run on five hits with two strikeout as MU won the opener in 5.0 innings. The Monarchs (21-17, 12-8 USA South) scored three runs in each of the final three innings to pull away for the win. Lindsay Tippett drove in five runs, including a three-run home run in the fourth inning, to pace the offense.
 
The Battling Bishops (12-18, 8-12 USA South) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning before the MU offense came alive.
 
In the third inning, Sarah Stapleton led off with a single and Jordan Adams reached on an error to give MU a pair of runners with nobody out. Katie Byrd reached on a bunt single that loaded the bases and Tippett followed with another bunt, which combined with an NCWC error, allowed Stapleton to score and tie the game at 1-1. Ally Griffin and Natalie High then came through with back-to-back RBI singles for a 3-0 Monarch lead.
 
After Stapleton and Adams led off the fourth with base hits, Tippett hit her second home run of the season with one out to put Methodist on top, 6-3. The Monarchs put the game away with three more runs in the fifth inning, taking advantage of two of NCWC's six errors on the game, to go up 9-1.
 
Tippett finished 1-for-2 two at the plate and scored twice. Stapleton was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and Byrd, Griffin and High all contributed a pair of base hits. Adams was 1-for-3 with a stolen base, an RBI and two runs.
 
In game two, Brittany Miller allowed two runs (1 ER) on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts to pick up the win. Farmer earned the save, pitching 1.1 innings of perfect relief. Tippett continued her torrid hitting, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs.
 
The Monarchs took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Marcy McKee's RBI single and then went up 3-0 in the top of the third inning on a Katie Byrd fielder's choice and Tippett's RBI double. The Battling Bishops made it a 3-1 game with a single run in the bottom of the third inning, but the Monarchs got that run back in the fifth on Tippett's second RBI two-bagger.
 
NCWC made it a 4-2 game in the sixth inning before Farmer came in and shut the door on the Bishops' rally.
 
Stapleton and Adams each single and scored a run for the Monarchs.
 
Methodist is in action at Christopher Newport on Sunday beginning at 1:00 pm.
