NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport softball team swept both games of a doubleheader versus Methodist on Sunday afternoon at Captains Park.

The Captains (28-11, 18-3 USA South) won a tight affair, 4-1, in the opener, before posting a 16-6, five-inning win over the Monarchs (21-19, 12-10 USA South) in the nightcap.

The Captains took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the first game before MU dented the scoreboard in the third inning. Krista Zentner blasted a one-out home run to pull MU to within a run at 2-1. CNU came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to seal the game.

Jessica Farmer was a tough-luck loser for the Monarchs, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Methodist, which was held to five hits in the game, was led by Jordan Adams and Zentner, who had two base hits apiece.

In the second game, CNU scored in each of the first three innings, including eight runs in the third inning to post the 10-run win.

Trailing 3-1 after the first, the Monarchs answered with three runs in the second inning to take a 4-3 lead. Zentner walked to lead off the inning and Marcy McKee and Heather Williams followed with singles, allowing Zentner to score and make it a 3-2 game. Sarah Stapleton laid down a sacrifice bunt to put two runners in scoring position with two outs and Katie Byrd followed with a two-run double for the 4-3 lead.

However, CNU came back with five runs in the bottom of the inning to regain an 8-4 lead, and after MU went scoreless in the third, the Captains tallied eight runs in the third to put the game away.

Brittany Miller took the loss for the Monarchs, allowing 11 runs (6 ER) on 11 hits and a walk in 2.0 innings. Williams was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Monarchs. Byrd finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Jordan Adams added one hit in three at bats with an RBI and a run scored.

Methodist is back in action on Friday when it begins play in the USA South Tournament on Friday. The Monarchs take on Meredith at 9:00 am at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex.
