Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Spencer Nichols' goal with under a minute remaining in the first overtime lifted Birmingham-Southern to a 4-3 (OT) win over the Methodist men's soccer team on Friday evening at the BSC Soccer Complex.
Birmingham-Southern (1-0) took advantage of MU (0-1) defender
Ben Gold's second yellow card, and subsequent ejection, during the 85th minute, immediately adding a goal on Johannes Loeffler's successful free kick. The Panthers fired off five shots in the following four minutes, including Brooks Busby's game-tying tally with
19 seconds left in regulation.
Nichols then ended the night with his score with 35 seconds left in the first overtime. Dylan Rose recorded the assist.
The Panthers' rally came after the Monarchs raced out to a 3-1 on
Mike Ilodigwe's goal in the 56th minute. In the first half,
Foday Kamara scored on a header in the fourth minute to give MU a 1-0 lead.
Hank Tobener was credited with the assist. Thirty minutes later, Tobener headed in his own score on an assist from
Chris Ryan, making it 2-0 in favor of the Green and Gold.
Birmingham-Southern got on the board in the 38th minute as Loeffler found the back of the net on a feed from Ryan Gill. As the first-half buzzer sounded, Methodist left the field leading 2-1.
A little over 10 minutes into the second period,
Mike Ilodigwe netted a score after taking a pass from
David Korneliusson, giving MU a two-goal lead (3-1). With just under five minutes remaining in the contest.
For the game, Birmingham-Southern held the edge in shots (18-14) and shots on goal (6-3).
Goalkeeper
Nick Martens (0-1) took the loss for Methodist, allowing four goals and making six saves. His BSC counterpart, Jonas Heidrich (1-0), had two saves.
Methodist will play on Sunday against Rhodes College, starting at 11:00 am CST.
