BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Methodist men's soccer team scored the game's first three goals, and held on for a 3-2 victory against Rhodes on Sunday afternoon at the BSC Soccer Complex.
Less than five minutes into the action, Sean MacDonald headed in a Hank Tobener corner kick from the right side of the field, giving MU (1-1) a 1-0 edge. Later in the half, another Tobener corner kick from the right resulted in an Eirik Nordseth score, putting the team up, 2-0, an advantage that Methodist carried into halftime.
In the second half, Eric McGinnis tallied the final Methodist scoring strike after receiving a pass from Mike Ilodigwe in the 52nd minute, extending the Monarch lead to 3-0. Two goals by Rhodes' (1-1) Jason Crutcher in a span of less than seven minutes made it a one-goal game by the 62:05 mark. Evan Wladis was credited with assists on both tallies.
The Lynx put the heat on Methodist keeper Nick Martens in the last 15 seconds of play, firing two shots in that time, including a last-second boot off the foot of Eric Ly that Martens stopped to preserve the win.
Methodist held an 18-13 edge in shots, including 11-7 on goal.
Monarch keeper Martens (1-1) earned the win and stopped four shots. Rhodes netminder Riley Sheen took the loss and made eight saves as MU held an 18-13 advantage in shots.
MU's next game will be on the road in New Jersey against William Patterson on Friday at 7:30 pm.
