Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The MU men's soccer team dropped its home opener, 2-1, to former USA South opponent Christopher Newport on Saturday afternoon at the Monarch Soccerplex.
Following a scoreless first half, the Monarchs (1-3-1) got on the board first as they took advantage of confusion in front of the CNU (2-2-1) goal, scoring directly on
Hank Tobener's corner kick to take 1-0 lead at the 66:23 mark.
The Captains came back to tie the game up, 1-1, in the 77th minute as Sean Christein took a cross from Connor Brittan and converted. To cap the day's scoring, Jack Cooper headed a ball past MU's
Nick Martens with 8:12 remaining in regulation, giving CNU a 2-1 advantage that it would not relinquish.
The Monarchs narrowly edged the Captains in shots (10-9). MU's
Nick Martens (1-3-1) suffered the loss, making five saves. CNU's Nolan Mann (1-2-1) claimed the victory, stopping five shots.
Methodist returns to play at the Monarch Soccerplex this Tuesday against Virginia Wesleyan at 4:00 p.m.
