Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist men's soccer team fell, 2-0, to visiting Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday afternoon.
The Monarchs (1-4-1) fell behind, 1-0, to the Marlins (5-2-0) in the 13th minute as Brian Cornell headed in a ball past MU goalkeeper
Nick Martens. Josh Kemp earned an assist on Cornell's tally. Later in the first half, VWC's Robert Holschuh took advantage of Martens' bobble after he made a save, booting the ball into the back of the net at the 36:21 mark to make it a two-goal game.
Methodist ended the day with the upper hand in shots (11-10), but could not capitalize on 17 fouls and three yellow cards charged against Virginia Wesleyan. In particular Marlins goalkeeper Connor Kirkham (5-2-0) and the supporting defense combined for six saves, stifling the Monarchs' offensive attack.
MU's Martens (1-4-1) was charged with the loss, making three saves.
Methodist will return to the pitch on Thursday as it hosts Southern Virginia at 5:00 pm.
