Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – A seven-run seventh inning by Hampden-Sydney made the difference as the Methodist baseball team lost, 11-5, on Wednesday afternoon at Ty Cobb Ballpark.

Already trailing by a 4-1 margin after six-and-a-half innings, Methodist (3-2) used three different pitchers during the bottom of the seventh as Hampden-Sydney (4-2) tagged the Monarch relief corps for seven runs and nine hits, including three for extra bases.

Lee Carneal had a run-scoring triple, Spencer Wiles hit an RBI double and Jeff Gray added a double to score Hunter Lewis. By the time Jacob Shumate retired Wiles on a popout for the third out, the Tigers had batted around and held an 11-1 lead.

The Monarchs scored four runs in their final turn to bat during the ninth. Stephen Nalls plated Lucas Scott on an RBI single, and Pete Wildeboer followed with a run-scoring base hit of his own. Nalls would later score from third on a passed ball, and Ray Lanners drove in Methodist's final run with an RBI double.

The Tigers tallied the game's first four runs in their half of the fourth, and knocked out Monarch starting pitcher Michael Inman in the process. After allowing a double and a base on balls to the first two batters of the inning, Inman's day on the mound ended, and Daniel Royer replaced him.

Nathan Chamberlin immediately greeted Royer with an RBI single, and Andrew Tucker would later cross the plate on a passed ball. Carneal plated Chamberlin with a run-scoring groundout, and Wiles drove home Garrett Birnbaum with an RBI single for a 4-0 edge.

Nalls had two singles Methodist, which finished the afternoon with eight base hits. Inman (1-1) took the loss as he threw one-plus inning and allowed two hits, two runs and a walk.

Carneal went 3-for-4 at the plate, and Gray added doubles and two runs scored for the Tigers, which finished with 15 base hits. Trevor Otey (2-0) earned the win as he worked around three hits in two scoreless innings of relief.

The Monarchs will play their next game on Saturday when Emory University visits Armstrong-Shelley Field. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm.
