Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist baseball team dropped a non-conference meeting to Randolph-Macon, 9-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Armstrong-Shelley Field.
The Yellow Jackets (19-12) finished with 18 base hits against eight different Monarch (19-13) pitchers.
After tying the game at 3-3 via a one-out solo home run by Tim Benjamin in the fifth, Randolph-Macon scored the contest's final six runs.
In the top of the sixth, Jordan Schmeer lead off with a single up the middle, and later advanced to second on a Nate Meiners base hit. Two batters later, Nicholas Maiolo plated Schmeer on a double down the left field line to put runners on second and third with one out. Two batters down the line, Sid Harvey struck out swinging, but reached base on a wild pitch that brought home Meiners from third to make it 5-3 in favor of the Yellow Jackets.
Randolph-Macon added a three-spot in the seventh to widen its lead to 8-3 as Maiolo hit a two-run single, and Benjamin had a run-scoring hit.
Earlier in the game, Methodist scored a single run in each of the first three innings to go ahead by a 3-2 margin.
Josh Howard had a run-scoring groundout in the first, and the Monarchs would manufacture a run in the second as a rundown resulted in an out as well as
Alex Rodriguez coming home. To wrap Methodist's scoring,
Stephen Nalls hit an RBI single to right-center to plate
Chris Power in the bottom of the third.
The Monarchs ended the afternoon with just five base hits, including three singles by their leadoff man, Power. He went 3-for-4 and scored twice.
Ross Leggett (1-1) took the loss as he went 1.0 inning and gave up two runs on three hits. He struck out two.
The Yellow Jackets had five players with multiple hits. Meiners batted 5-for-6, including a double, and scored three times. Maiolo went 3-for-5 with a double and four RBI, and Benjamin batted 3-for-6 with a home run and drove in three. Schmeer was 3-for-6 with two runs scored.
Austin Bain (1-0) notched the win after throwing 5.0 innings. He gave up three runs (2 ER) on four hits and three walks. He struck out none. Nic Phelps picked up the save. He pitched 3.0 scoreless innings and gave up a single hit and struck out one.
Methodist will begin a series with a doubleheader versus Huntingdon on Friday afternoon. First pitch of the game one will be 1:00 pm at Armstrong-Shelley Field.
