Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist men's soccer team toppled Cairn University this Sunday at the Monarch Soccerplex with an 8-0 blowout in the third game of the Army Strong Invitational presented by KFC.
In their second game of the 2014 season, the Monarchs (2-0) dominated from the first whistle and kept Cairn pinned in their defensive half for much of the first 45 minutes of play. For the game, MU out-shot CU 35-1, tallying 16 shots on frame to the Highlander's zero. The Monarchs were able to convert in the 15th minute of the game when
Chris Murphy notched his first goal of the season with a clean strike to the top left of the net.
Six minutes later, Methodist got on the scoreboard again. Last season's second-leading goal scorer
Nahom Hargwoin headed in his first goal of his senior season, bringing the Green and Gold to an early 2-0 advantage.
Stefan Cyvin closed out the first half with his second goal of the season in the 41st minute giving the Monarchs at a comfortable 3-0 lead.
To open the second half, Methodist started right where it left off and netted its fourth goal just over four minutes in. With an assist from Hargwoin,
Seth Harrison added his third goal of the weekend.
Quickly after, in the 52nd minute, Hargwoin found the net for the second time in the match, pushing the Monarchs lead to 5-0.
In a matter of six minutes,
David Korneliusson added two goals to the Monarchs' score. At the 56th minute, following a pass from Hargwoin, Korneliusson scored his first goal of the 2014 campaign. Moments later in the 62nd minute, he tacked on another goal putting the scoreboard at 7-0 in Methodist's favor.
In dramatic fashion,
Zach Landry registered his first collegiate goal with the scoreboard at 89:59. After knocking his first attempt off the post, Landry collected his own rebound and was able to send the final goal of the match to the back of the net, bringing the final score to 8-0.
Alex Rabone started in goal for Methodist and earned the win bringing his overall record to 2-0. He was not forced to make a save.
Logan Ratner played the final 45 minutes and likewise was not tested. Caleb Pancoast started in goal for Cairn and played all 90 minutes. He allowed eight goals while also making eight saves.
The Green and Gold continue their home play this weekend, hosting the Soccer Kicks Cancer - MU Invitational starting Saturday against Marietta. The match is scheduled to start at 2:00 pm.
