Monarch Men's Soccer Tops Ferrum, 4-0, in USA South Quarterfinals

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The second-seeded Methodist men's soccer team blanked the No. 7 Ferrum College, 4-0, in Saturday's USA South quarterfinal match at Monarch Soccer Stadium.

The Monarchs advance to the semifinal game with an overall record of 12-4-3, while the Panthers finish their 2015 season 5-14 overall.

Haakan Wahlstrom scored twice in Saturday's match, with his first goal coming off a deflected shot by Fredrik Aalberg, to put MU ahead, 1-0, in the eighth minute.

In the 29th minute, a Ferrum defender passed the ball back for the starting goalkeeper, Sydnor Trent, to clear, but put too much power behind the ball and ended up sending it over Trent's head in to the back of the net for a 2-0 Methodist advantage.

Wahlstrom tallied his second goal of the match in the 74th minute, unassisted, beating his defender and sending the ball into the bottom right corner of the net, pushing the Monarchs to a 3-0 lead.

Four minutes later, Methodist recorded the last tally of the match as Tyler Ursuy sent a feed through two defenders to find Aalberg in the middle of the box and the rookie converted for a 4-0 advantage.

The Monarch offense put on an outstanding performance, outshooting the Panthers 17-3. MU's defense held up their end of the bargain as well, allowing FC to only take one shot on goal, while Methodist tallied seven.

Alex Rabone improved to 12-4-3 on Saturday, making one save in 84:44, before handing the reins to Johnathan Moore, who was not forced to make any saves in his 5:16 in goal. Trent took the loss, allowing four goals and making three saves in 90:00.

The Monarchs will compete in the semifinal match against Maryville at 2:30 pm on Friday, hosted by the top-seeded Greensboro College.
