Methodist Volleyball Reaches 20-Win Plateau with Split

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Methodist volleyball team secured just its fourth 20-win season since 1990 with a split of a pair of matches on Saturday at Meredith College. The Monarchs opened with a 3-0 loss to Maryville and closed out the day with a 3-2 win over Covenant.
 
The Monarchs wrapped up the regular season with an overall record of 20-9 and a league mark of 12-7. While just the fourth 20-win season since 1990, it's the third time MU has accomplished the feat since 2010, including records of 20-12 in 2010, and 21-8 in 2011.
 
Maryville upended the Green and Gold, 25-22, 25-18, 25-14, while MU bounced back with a 25-20, 19-25, 25-18, 19-25, 16-14 thriller over the Scots.
 
In the loss to Maryville, Cassidy Hayes led the Monarchs with 10 kills, while Ashley Beardsley added eight. The Methodist offense hit just .121 as a team and had seven service errors as it struggled to get on track. Maggie Harris led the team with 24 assists, and Jordan Tew had three service aces.
 
Karly Klimas had 13 digs and Alyssa Coffey added seven.
 
The Monarchs' offense found its groove in the nightcap, hitting .244 as a team and seeing four players record at least 10 kills. Hayes led the way with 18 kills, and Tew had 13. Beardsley and Brittany Ter Meer had 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
 
Harris had 57 assists and 11 digs, while Tew also completed a double-double with 16 digs. Klimas led the team with 26 digs and Chyenne Pump and Coffey each had 14.
 
The Monarchs will await final word on seeding and a first-round opponent for the USA South Tournament which is set to begin on Friday.
