Monarch Volleyball Rallies for 3-2 Win Over Ferrum

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist volleyball team stretched its win streak to four and avenged an earlier loss to Ferrum with a come-from-behind, 3-2, win over the Panthers on Tuesday evening at the Riddle Center.

The Monarchs (11-6, 6-4 USA South) held off the Panthers in the first set, 26-24, but fell behind 2-1 after Ferrum won the second and third sets by the same 25-17 score. In the fourth, MU fell behind early, 9-4, but managed to tie the set at 12-12 before going on to win 25-21.

The fifth set was back-and-forth as MU took a 7-4 lead only to see the Panthers storm back and take a 10-7 lead with Hannah Helbert serving.  The Monarchs took a 13-12 lead on back-to-back kills by Jordan Tew, but Ferrum inched ahead 15-14. Methodist staved off match point, and leading 17-16, got the game-winning point on an emphatic kill from Ashley Beardsley to seal the win.

Cassidy Hayes was one of four MU players with at least 10 kills and led all players with 15. Tew and Beardsley each had 13, and Brittany Ter Meer added 11. Maggie Harris racked up 45 assists on the night, and Alyssa Coffey chipped in three service aces. Karly Klimas led the defense with a season-high 34 digs, while Harris had 16, Reagan Holloway added 16, and Coffey had 10.

Ebony Crawford led Ferrum with 13 kills, Jessica Turner and Jordan Joyce each had 12, and Helbert chipped in 10. Cheyenne Strickland notched 43 assists, five service aces and 23 digs, while Sarah Hendrix led the Panthers with 24 digs. Turner and Helbert had 17 and 16 digs, respectively.

Methodist next plays on Friday when it hosts Salem at 7:00 pm.
