Monarchs Trump Salem, 3-1, in Volleyball

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist volleyball team picked up a 3-1 win over Salem on Friday night at the Riddle Center.

The Monarchs improved to 12-6 on the season by dispatching the Spirits, 25-13, 25-22, 22-25, 25-9. As a team the Monarchs hit .257 on the night, and used a strong service game (13 aces) to keep Salem (2-10) at bay.

Methodist was in line for a sweep, but after the Spirits battled back to take the third set, MU rattled off the first 15 point of the fourth set, including 14 with Alyssa Coffey at the service line, to easily clinch the match. Coffey finished with four aces on the evening, as did Karly Klimas.

Cassidy Hayes led all players with 19 kills and hit .459 for the match. Brittany Ter Meer added 13 kills and three blocks, while Kaitlyn Rush chipped in nine kills, and McKayla Walker and Ashley Beardsley each had six. Maggie Harris poured in a season-high 55 assists and added 10 digs while Klimas registered 24 digs. She now needs only 65 digs to become the school's all-time leader in that category.

Mariah Sharon and Kylie Taffer had 14 and 13 kills, respectively, to lead the Spirits. Brandy Bednorz had 32 assists and a team-best 12 digs. Morgan Proulx had a pair of service aces, and Julissa Almonte added nine digs on the evening.

The Monarchs will host a tri-match on Saturday beginning at 4:00 pm when they host Randolph College.
