Monarch Men's Soccer Begins League Action with 2-2 Draw Against Maryville

MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The Methodist men's soccer competed in its first conference match of 2015 on Saturday afternoon against the host Maryville Scots, which ended in a double-overtime deadlock, at 2-2.

Methodist (2-4-2, 0-0-1 USAS) struck first in the 15th minute, as Trevor Hendricks scored on a rebound goal off a corner kick for a 1-0 advantage.

The Scots (5-1-1, 0-0-1 USAS) knotted things up, 1-1, in the 34th minute when Thomas Palmer converted a free kick from the top of the box. This score would hold until intermission.

In the second half, just before the 60th minute, Maryville's Hayden Puryear found Palmer and he blasted his sixth goal of the season into the lower left past Alex Rabone, giving the Scots a 2-1 edge.

Methodist forced the match into extra time in the 76th minute when Eirik Nordseth sent a free kick into the net making the score 2-2 at the end of regulation.

Maryville's offense took a pair of shots in the overtime periods, but was unsuccessful, and the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

In a very physical game that totaled 34 fouls, Methodist outshot the Scots, 14-11, and 7-4 in shots on frame.

In all 110 minutes, Rabone was forced to make two saves while Maryville's starting goalkeeper Jon Taylor recorded five saves.

The Monarchs continue action on Sunday, traveling to Sewanee, Tenn. to compete against the Sewanee Tigers at 2:30 pm.
