LAGRANGE, Ga. – Behind four goals in the first 25 minutes of play, the Methodist men's soccer team posted a 6-1 victory against LaGrange on Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, the Monarchs end the regular season 7-7-1 overall behind a 5-4 mark in conference play and claimed the No. 5 seed in the USA South Tournament. Meanwhile, the Panthers drop to 5-11-1 on the year with a 2-7-1 record in league play and miss the conference tournament by two points.
The scoring started early in the contest when
Seth Harrison recorded his third goal of the season after taking a pass from
Trevor Hendricks at the 2:43 mark. Hendricks was successful on a penalty kick to extend the lead, 2-0, in the 17th minutes. Just over four minutes later, the Monarchs notched another goal off the foot of
Austin Lang, his third of the year. The final goal of the half came from
Conor Morris who registered his second goal of the season at the 23:26 mark to make the halftime score, 4-0.
In the second half,
Lawson Lamm scored his first goal of the year with an assist from Hendricks, his second of the game, in the 57th minute to increase the lead to 5-0. Harrison recorded his second goal of the contest at the 63:51 mark to make the score, 6-0. LaGrange was able to get one score back before the end of the game when Errick Sturm registered his ninth goal of the season, unassisted, at the 76:39 mark.
The Monarchs outshot the Panthers 18-8 and also held an edge in corner kicks, 3-2.
Goalkeeper
Jonathan Moore (6-5-1) earned the win after not allowing a goal and making two saves in nearly 75 minutes of action before giving way to
Joshua Ryan who finished the game. Cory Aycock (3-7-1) made six saves in all 90 minutes on Wednesday night.
Methodist returns to action in the USA South Tournament in Danville, Virginia, against the No. 4 seed Averett on Saturday, Oct. 29, beginning at 5 pm.
