DANVILLE, Va. –
Seth Harrison scored two goals as the Methodist men's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory against the No. 4 seed, Averett, in the quarterfinals of the USA South Men's Soccer Tournament on Saturday evening.
With the win, the Monarchs advance to the semifinals of the league tournament and improve to 8-7-1 on the year. Meanwhile, the Cougars end their season with an 8-11 record.
Neither team found the back of the net in the first half as the two sides combined for 10 shots, including five on target.
In the second half, Harrison netted his first goal of the game and fifth of the season after taking a strike from about 30 yards out, 1-0, in the 50th minute. Averett responded at the 52:14 mark when Tobias Andreasson hit a shot from about 25 yards out. In the 59th minute, Harrison gave the Monarchs the lead after taking a pass from
Rahmel Stewart off a free kick, 2-1.
Goalkeeper
Jonathan Moore (7-5-1) posted two saves in the win, while Austin Bramhall registered six saves in 90 minutes.
The Monarchs outshot the Cougars 16-11, while also holding an 11-1 edge in corner kicks. There were eight yellow cards during the contest.
After advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament, Methodist returns to action to face the No. 1 seed, Maryville, on Friday, Nov. 4.
