GREENSBORO, N.C. — Ty Haith scored with 40 seconds to play as the Methodist men's lacrosse team rallied for an 11-10 win at Greensboro on Thursday afternoon.
Haith's goal made winners of MU (6-5) after the Green and Gold had squandered an early 5-0 lead over the Pride (3-9).
Methodist's Chris Lombardi scored the lone goal of the first quarter and MU added four goals, by four different players, in the second period for a five-goal advantage at the break. Jordan DeSalvo, AJ Mejia, Kyle Clarkson and Jay Robinson provided the scores for MU in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, Greensboro scored the first four goals to trim the MU lead to 5-4 with 7:38 left in the period. Clarkson halted the Pride run when he scored off a feed from Lombardi with 5:38 remaining in the quarter, and Sean Mayefskie made it 7-4 at the 3:31 mark.
Greensboro, however, produced another run and by the 9:28 mark of the fourth quarter, had taken an 8-7 lead on Charles Stringfellow's unassisted goal. The two teams traded goals until Stringfellow fed Denis Radcliffe or a go-ahead goal (10-9) as the clock showed 1:59 to play.
The Monarchs needed just 18 seconds to tie the game at 10-10 as MU was able to execute a play coming out of a timeout. Following Haith's goal with 40 second to play, DeSalvo won the face off for MU, but a Monarch turnover gave possession back to the Pride, but Stringfellow's shot with six seconds to play was wide of the cage.
Methodist outshot Greensboro, 47-26, and captured 37 ground balls to 29 for the Pride. Methodist also won 17-of-25 face offs, with DeSalvo taking every draw for the Monarchs.
Robinson (2g), Smerka (2g), Clarkson (2g), and Lombardi (1g, 1a) all had two points for the Monarchs. DeSalvo had 11 ground balls, and Robinson and Clarkson each had three. Jackson Bingham earned the win in the cage, making six saves in the contest.
The Monarchs are back in action on Tuesday when they host Guilford at 4:00 pm.
