FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist baseball team completed a series sweep of Huntingdon on Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 victory at Armstrong-Shelley Field.
Prior to the game, the Monarchs (19-14, 10-8 USAS) honored its 10 seniors:
Alex Rodriguez,
Alex Dockery,
Ross Leggett,
Travis Johnson,
Stephen Nalls,
Adam Gunn,
Ray Lanners,
Aaron O'Neil,
Nick Zieniuk and Chris Nichols.
Methodist gained an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when a sacrifice bunt by
Davis Cass plated Rodriguez and a double to right field by Nalls scored
Lucas Scott.
A sacrifice fly by Cass in the bottom of the third scored Rodriguez for a 3-0 Methodist lead before Lanners led the fourth off with a home run to right-center to push the Monarchs ahead, 4-0, and serve as the final tally of the ballgame.
On the day, Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Cass was 1-for-2 with two RBI. Scott was 2-for-4 and scored once and
Colin Ford and Dockery both finished 2-for-4. Gunn drew two walks.
The Methodist pitching staff held the visiting Hawks (19-16, 8-9 USAS) to just five hits on the day. Alex Raley was 2-for-3 and Jordan Criswell, Mason Throneberry and Josh Hines accounted for the other three hits.
Tyler Hardee (4-2) was awarded the win after pitching the first 6.0 innings and allowing no runs on just four hits with seven strikeouts.
Madison Cook earned the save after pitching the final 3.0 innings and allowed just one hit with three strikeouts.
Starting pitcher, Jared Gonzalez (4-4), took the loss after tossing the first 5.0 innings and allowing four runs on nine hits with one strikeout. Matt Gatewood entered in relief and pitched 2.1 innings and allowed two hits with two strikeouts before Throneberry finished the final 0.2 innings and allowed no hits.
Methodist will host Hampden-Sydney on Tuesday evening with the first pitch slated for 6:00 pm.
