Monarchs Men's Soccer Falls to CNU, 4-0

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – In a game against a nationally-recognized opponent, the Methodist men's soccer team suffered a 4-0 loss at Christopher Newport on Wednesday evening.

With the loss, the Monarchs fall to 0-3-1 overall, while the Captains improve to 5-0 on the season.

CNU opened the scoring early in the first period when Zachary Ballard tallied his second goal of the season after taking a pass from Jimmy Grace at the 4:26 mark. Soon after, Stephen Durbin registered his fourth goal of the year after receiving a pass from the goalkeeper Zach Pedini in the 11th minute. With nine minutes left in the period, Jordan Boone scored the third goal of the game for the Captains with assists from Harry Nodwell and Teig Lesko to make the halftime score, 3-0.

In the second half, Andrew Gogolin scored his third goal of the season with an assist from Stephen Durbin in the 55th minute to increase the lead to 4-0. The Monarchs had a few scoring chances toward the end of the half, but could not get on the board. With about five minutes left to play, Kristoffer Skarstein had a chance on a header that went just wide, before Lawson Lamm had an opportunity a few moments later that went high.

Goalkeeper Jonathan Moore (0-1-1) posted five saves in the loss, while Pedini (5-0) registered two saves over 68 minutes as he registered the victory.

The two sides combined for 30 shots with CNU holding an 18-12 advantage, including nine shots on target. The Captains also had a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks.

MU returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 17, as it travels to face Southern Virginia at 1 pm.
