FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Methodist men's soccer team opened its season with a 3-0 loss to Mary Washington on Friday evening.

With the result, the Monarchs start the 2017 season 0-1, while the Eagles improve to 1-0 on the year.

MU recorded the first shot of the game in the early minutes after a header by
Kristoffer Skarstein went high. The Monarchs also had a chance in the 20th minute when
Gerry Madden recorded the team's first shot on target, but was pushed aside. Neither side found the back of the net until the last minutes of the first half. After a foul inside the box, Tommy Mead scored on a penalty kick for UMW at the 43:51 mark to take a 1-0 lead into the break.

In the second half, the Eagles extended their lead in the 52nd minute after Jacob Lovinger struck a volley past the keeper, 2-0. UMW notched another goal at the 76:10 mark to earn a 3-0 victory.

Jonathan Moore (0-1) played all 90 minutes and faced seven shots making four saves. For the Eagles, Matt Spencer stopped all four shots he faced in 90 minutes.

UMW outshot the Monarchs 10-5 and also held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Methodist returns to action tomorrow, Sept. 2, in a neutral-site game against Chapman in Fredericksburg, Va., beginning at 2:30 pm.
