FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Methodist men's soccer team closed its first weekend of the 2017 season with a 1-1 double overtime draw with Chapman on Saturday afternoon.

With the result, the Monarchs move to 0-1-1 on the season, while the Panthers, who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship a season ago, also sits at 0-1-1 after a weekend on the campus of Mary Washington.

Chapman opened the scoring just minutes into the contest when Elliot Braund took a pass from Justo Garcia at the 5:36 mark of the first half to take a 1-0 lead. Despite five shots in the first period, including three on goal, the Green and Gold did not find the back of the net as the Panthers held on to a 1-0 at the half.

After the recess, the Monarchs tied the score after
Isaac Sanchez recorded his first collegiate goal at the 54:53 mark, 1-1. Neither team could get behind a goalkeeper as the draw held to the end of regulation to send the match the overtime.

In the first period of extra time, the Panthers held MU without a shot and put up three of their own before heading into a second overtime frame. The final minutes saw each side record a shot, but against, the score held at 1-1.

Jonathan Moore played all 110 minutes and made a career-high seven saves in net. Meanwhile, Sean Augustine stopped six of the seven shots he faced in 110 minutes.

CU outshot MU by a 21-9 margin, while also holding a 9-5 edge in corner kicks. The two teams combined for 35 fouls and three yellow cards.

Methodist returns to action on Friday, Sept. 8, for its home opener and first-ever night game at Monarch Soccerplex against Marymount, which is set to begin at 7 pm.
