Monarchs Down Falcons in Men's Soccer, 3-2

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist men's soccer team scored twice in the first half and held on for a 3-2 victory against Pfeiffer on Wednesday night.
 
With the win, the Monarchs are now 5-2-1 on the season and have won four straight matches, while the Falcons dropped to 1-4-0 overall.
 
MU got on the board in the opening minutes of the contest as Isaac Sanchez notched a goal at the 2:06 mark of the first half, 1-0. The Monarchs added another goal in the 37th minute when Zach Landry scored with an assist from Sanchez. In the final seconds of the first period, Chris Brown cut the deficit in half after scoring off a rebound, 2-1.
 
Grant Nelson scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 55:09 mark as MU took a 3-1 lead. In the 74th minute, Pfeiffer again cut the lead to one goal when Caleb Bratager netted a goal, but the comeback fell short.
 
Jonathan Moore made eight saves in goal and played all 90 minutes, while Tomas Correa pushed aside one shot and allowed three.
 
The Falcons outshot the Monarchs 15-8 and held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. Pfeiffer was called for 10 fouls in each half, while MU totaled just nine in the game. Eight yellow cards were handed out, including five in the second half, in the physical contest
 
Methodist returns to action on Saturday against Brevard at the Monarch Soccerplex beginning at 3:30 pm.
