FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist men's soccer team defeated Brevard, 3-2, at the Monarch Soccerplex on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Monarchs are now 6-2-1 on the season and have won each of their last five matches. Meanwhile, the Tornados drop to 1-3 on their young season.
The scoring started in the first half as
Isaac Sanchez notched a goal on a free kick from just outside of the box at the 16:04 mark. The Monarchs also had a scoring opportunity early in the half when
Zvi Ferrari was alone behind the goalkeeper, but his shot was knocked aside by a sliding defender. Brevard also had an opportunity when three-consecutive shots were stopped by Monarch defenders before a fourth shot went high. MU was able to hold on to a 1-0 lead into the break.
In the second half, Ferrari scored after taking a long pass into the box from
Gerry Madden at the 51:09 mark. Less than a minute later, Jorge Jimenez struck a shot in the box to put Brevard on the board, 2-1.
Conor Morris took a pass from
Tyler Ursuy to give the Monarchs a 3-1 lead in the 70th minute. Jesse Omezi scored on a penalty kick after a foul inside the box at the 86:23 mark, but could not complete the comeback as MU held on for a 3-2 victory.
Jonathan Moore pushed aside three shots in all 90 minutes in the net, while Hiroki Noguchi made five saves in addition to a team save in the first half.
MU outshot the Tornados 16-12, while also holding a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Brevard was given two yellow cards in the loss.
Methodist returns to action on Sept. 27, as it travels to face William Peace beginning at 6 pm.
