Volleyball Rides Strong Openings To a Pair of Sweeps

LAGRANGE, Ga.  Lili Henry and Brittany Ter Meer led the Monarchs in a pair of 3-0 sweeps in the season-opener in LaGrange, Georgia, against LaGrange College and Toccoa Falls College in a pair of non-conference matches.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 

  • Henry had 25 set assists in each game for a total of 50 between both matches, and Ter Meer accumulated a team-best 15 kills during the day's sweep.
  • Jasmine Tapscott collected 12 kills and five total blocks to end the day second in points. Ter Meer paced the Monarchs with 19.5 points (15 kills, 3 service aces, 1 solo block, 1 block assist).
  • Maddie Barga reeled off six service aces to pace the team from behind the service line.
  • Megan Andrews had 20 digs combined in the two matches despite playing as an outside hitter who added nine kills.
  • Methodist combined to out score their opponents in the opening sets, 50-18. Against LaGrange, Methodist raced out to an 8-1 lead, then later in the Toccoa Falls match were able to pull out to a lightning-quick 10-0 lead bulge. Henry assisted on five of the first ten points against Toccoa Falls.
  • To win the second set against LaGrange, Henry registered an assist on each of the last seven kills.
  • Methodist used a 13-4 run in the middle of the second set against Toccoa Falls to push its advantage to 2-0..
  • Methodist's opponents combined to commit 45 errors between the two matches, compared to just 34 Methodist errors. Methodist also earned 20 combined service aces while giving up only two combined service aces to their opponents.


BEYOND THE STATS
 

  • With two more total blocks added to Ter Meer's total, she is now tied for third all-time in blocks at MU with 242. Ter Meer is tied with Hayley Williams (2009-12) and needs 22 more blocks on the season to be number two in the record books.
  • Methodist starts 2-0 for the second consecutive season. The last time Methodist had swept their first two opponents was 2011 when Methodist won its first five matches and swept four opponents. Methodist went 21-8 overall and 13-5 in the conference that season.
  • Methodist moves to 5-2 against LaGrange since 2010.
  • Henry was one assist away from her career high in both games. She had a career-high 26 assists against Ferrum on October 28, 2017.


A PANTHER LOOK
 

  • Lauren Sanders led LaGrange with 10 assists and Courtney Swafford had a team-high 16 digs. The Panthers rebounded from the first set to pull within four points in the second, and three points in the final set.
  • In the tri-match, LaGrange defeated Toccoa Falls in a tightly-contested 3-1 match. Paeton Robinson had 21 assists, 11 kills, five digs, four service aces, and four total blocks for an all-around great game.


A SCREAMING EAGLE LOOK
 

  • Natalie Thompson led Toccoa Falls with a game-high eight kills, Kayla Gore had a team-high 19 assists, and Theresa Sullivan had a game-high 10 digs.
  • After being outscored 50-23 in the first two sets, Toccoa Falls battled in the final set to bring the score to 25-22.
  • In the tri-match, Toccoa Falls lost to LaGrange in a tightly-contested 3-1 match. Katie Hall had 11 kills and 10 digs in the match.

  • Methodist takes on Guilford in Greensboro, N.C., on Wednesday September 5 at 7 p.m. Guilford is 2-2 after dropping both of its games Saturday in Danville, Virginia.
