Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

1st-half goals stand up for Monarchs at Brevard

BREVARD, N.C.  Goals from Ulises Sanchez and Garrett Shan in the opening half of action Wednesday at Brevard College held up over the long run as Methodist finished off a 2-1 USA South men's soccer win over the host Tornadoes.

Hurricane/Tropical Storm Florence erased the previous two weeks of practice and games for the Monarchs, who settled into position at Brevard after just two practices.

Coincidence toyed with Methodist Wednesday as nearby lightning in the game's first minute delayed the contest for an hour before action was able to resume.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Brevard, 2-1
Records: Methodist 4-2 overall, 1-0 USA South; Brevard 1-6 overall, 0-3 USA South
Location: Ives-Lemel Family Field; Brevard, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist broke out of the blocks on fire, getting a shot off before the interrupting lighting strike, and upon returning to the pitch, reeling off five more shots before Brevard would challenge in its offensive third.
  • The fourth shot within that opening six-shot barrage came from Sanchez who pocketed his first collegiate goal, knocking one into the left side of the frame off an assist by Lawson Lamm at the 12:42 mark.
  • Though the Tornadoes found some footing after that initial tally, the pitch was still tilted downhill for Methodist as it accumulated a 4-2 shots advantage, with the next Monarch shot turning into another goal.
  • Conor Morris and Patrick Vazquez teamed up with connected passes to provide Shan the opportunity to increase the lead, netting his second of the season to provide Methodist with a 2-0 lead late in the 39th minute.
  • By recess, the Monarchs had forged a 10-2 shots edge, keeping Brevard goalkeeper Patrick Hall busy across the entirety of the opening 45 minutes.
  • The Tornadoes were the ones that came out with gusto after the halftime break, notching a Jackson Riddle goal less than three minutes into the half, and continuing to press the action well past the midway point of the stanza.
  • Though Methodist would not register a second-half shot until the 76th, its goalie maintained the one-goal advantage. Scott Brecke earned the win between the pipes, coming up with two saves after the initial Brevard score and adding to the two he had made in first-half action.

TORNADO TWISTS
  • Hall finished the game with six saves, preventing the game from getting out of reach for his teammates.
  • Riddle's goal was his first of the season, and was assisted by Matheus Makukawa.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Wednesday's game was a re-scheduled bout as Florence forced a postponement of the original September 22 date.
  • This was only the second meeting between the two programs as Brevard reclassifies from NCAA Division II to D-III. Last fall the Monarchs defeated Brevard, 3-2, in Fayetteville.
  • The 2018-19 academic year is Brevard's second year in the reclassification process.
  • The Tornadoes have not yet provided much offensive punch this season, scoring only one goal each in four games while getting shut out three times.
  • Preseason USA South coaches' polls listed Brevard as the runner-up choice in the West Division, and Methodist in the No. 3 spot in the East Division.

NEXT UP
  • Methodist hits the road again for the weekend, traveling to LaGrange on Saturday and to Huntingdon on Sunday for a pair of league match-ups.
  • Brevard welcomes William Peace to Ives-Lemel for a Saturday conference game.
