GREENSBORO, N.C. Methodist out shot host Guilford College Wednesday night in men's non-conference soccer action, but the Quakers were spot on with their attempts on goal, hitting on four of five on frame to capture a 4-1 win over the visiting Monarchs on Herb Appenzeller Field.
JUST THE FACTS
Final Score: Guilford def. Methodist, 4-1
Records: Methodist 1-2 overall, Guilford 3-0 overall
Location: Herb Appenzeller Field at Armfield Athletic Center, Greensboro, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Guilford scored on four of its five shots on goal to steal a win after getting out shot by Methodist, 8-7.
- Garrett Shan scored his first goal of the season for Methodist, trimming a 3-0 deficit with 30 minutes left in the game.
- Two of the Quakers' goals were lengthy plays. Their third marker was a breakaway goal and their last was a long pass that got behind the Monarch goalkeeper.
- Trailing only 1-0 midway through the opening half, Methodist picked up its first scoring chance on a sharp Yazeed Alshamekh attempt, but Guilford's Zach Van Kampen was able to make a charging save on the play to keep the Monarchs off the scoreboard.
- The third Guilford tally was perhaps the dagger to Methodist. Coming out of recess it was only a two-goal deficit but the Quakers added a third goal less than three minutes into second-half action to create a mountain of a hill for the Monarchs to climb.
BEYOND THE STATS
- Methodist defeated the Quakers in Fayetteville last season, which was the first meeting between the two teams since 2009.
