Craig Leads Attack But Falcons Take Match

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  The visiting Pfeiffer University Falcons entered Riddle Center and snatched a USA South Athletic Conference victory away from host Methodist volleyball Tuesday evening. The Falcons won 3-0 in a match where the first and final sets were decided by two points.

Kendall Craig, with a career-high eight kills plus a block assist, and Megan Andrews (four kills, four service aces) led the Monarch attack. Methodist had a 26-25 lead and set point in the first game but Pfeiffer scored the final three points for the early lead in the match. In the final set, the Monarchs were up 23-21 before ceding four consecutive points to the Falcons for the win.

Prone to competitive, back-and-forth matches, this is already the sixth time this season that the Monarchs' first set was decided by two points. There were only three such games all of last season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Falcons jumped out to a 12-7 lead in the first set before Methodist recovered to tie it at 12-12. The two teams traded points until two errors on Pfeiffer's Bri Weber gave Methodist a 26-25 lead. However, Weber responded with a kill to make it 26-26 and earned the set point with a service ace.
  • Assisted by three consecutive service aces by Andrews, the Monarchs had a 10-5 advantage in the third set. The Falcons battled back for a 16-16 score and Alyssa Wrench delivered with a kill and a service ace to give Methodist a 18-16 lead. A Kaeli Ryan kill and Lili Henry ace later widened the score to 20-17.
  • A bad set by Pfeiffer had the Monarchs two points away from winning the third set but the Falcons capped the game with two kills, a block, and finally, a service ace.

STAT FACTS
  • Geneva Barriger and Erica East assisted with four kills each, tied for second with Andrews.
  • Henry finished the game with 15 assists and Savannah Mullis had 10 assists of her own.
  • In addition to the team-high in service aces, Andrews also had a team-high in digs (nine).
  • Also, this is the fourth time this year that a game featured at least two sets that were decided by two.
  • Reagan Wyatt led the Falcons with 12.5 points (10 kills, two solo blocks, and one block assist).

UP NEXT
  • October 5, the Monarchs travel to Raleigh, N.C., for a USA South tri-match. Methodist will take on Meredith College at 12 p.m. and Mary Baldwin at 2 p.m.
  • The Falcons will also go on the road October 5 for a conference tri-match featuring William Peace and Averett.
