DANVILLE, Va. Methodist got off the opening five shots of the game, and led in that category by game's end Saturday at Averett University. But it was the host Cougars who escaped with a 1-0 USA South Athletic Conference men's soccer victory under the lights at Campbell Stadium.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Averett def. Methodist, 1-0
Records: Methodist 3-8-1 (1-7-1 USA South), Averett 5-9 (3-6)
Location: Campbell Stadium, Averett University; Danville, Va.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Methodist pressured the Averett defense right from the start, as Collin Hinnant sent the first shot of the game just wide of the frame less than one minute into the contest.
- Corner kick opportunities in the third and sixth minute also generate shots, both, though, resulting in headers sent high or wide.
- In between those set pieces was the first dangerous scoring chance of the game as Methodist's Christopher Shoffler put one on frame that Averett goalkeeper Matthew Merhoff needed to snare to keep the scoreboard blank.
- Averett eventually began to dig itself out from its defensive third and generate some shots of its own. A Cole Hupp save late in the 30th minute kept the Cougars off the scoresheet, but less than 30 seconds later they would earn the eventual game-winner.
- A set piece chance for Averett put Ty Michelson at the flag for a corner kick. His lofted insertion into the box found the head of teammate Erik Blick, who flicked his header into the back of the goal for the first and only goal of the contest.
- Methodist had a scoring opportunity squelched by a goalie save eight minutes later, and again in the 58th.
- A sequence of attacking pressure beginning in the 63rd minute were a few more opportunities for a Methodist equalizer, but three successive times Monarch shots were blocked from making it on frame by Cougar defenders.
- Hupp ended up with three saves between the pipes for Methodist.
