Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ja'Shawn Steward-Johnson

Monarchs Unable to Ground Falcons

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.   It was an off night for Methodist men's soccer as they played host to visiting Pfeiffer University in USA South Athletic Conference action Tuesday evening. The Falcons came away with a 5-0 victory.

The game felt closer than the score indicated and the Monarchs had several good looks and scoring chances but were unable to convert them into goals in this game. Methodist had a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks but the Falcons displayed a strong set piece defense. Pfeiffer's 16 shots were only two more than the Monarchs' 14 but the Falcons were more accurate with nine shots on goal compared to only five shots on target for Methodist.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Pfeiffer def. Methodist, 5-0
Records: Methodist 3-9-1 (1-8-1 USA South), Pfeiffer 6-8 (4-6)
Location: Monarch SoccerPlex; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The seemingly telepathic relationship between Caz Dabrowski and Caleb Bratager made all the difference in the game. Dabrowski connected with Bratager three times (24', 47' and 57') for goals with Bratager earning the hat trick and Dabrowski earning three assists. Their second connection gave Pfeiffer an insurmountable 3-0 lead two minutes into the second half.
  • The Monarchs actually had a noticeable edge in possession and forced the Falcons' defenders to make plays. Unfortunately for Methodist, Pfeiffer did, regularly clearing dangerous crosses and defending corners.
  • The Falcons' goalie was busy early, earning three saves in the game's first 10 minutes on two Rylan Hoerning and a Tyler Sheridan shot.
  • Following an off-target Hoerning shot in the 46th minute, Pfeiffer needed less than 40 seconds after its goal kick to deliver the dagger third goal.
  • Jonathan Quintero scored the game's opening goal in the 15th minute with a header into the lower left corner.

STAT FACTS
  • Hoerning led Methodist with five shots taken and he put three of those shots on frame.
  • Cole Hupp earned three saves against two goals allowed in his 45 minutes of action.
  • Through the final 80 minutes, the Monarchs were only able to put two shots on target despite taking 11 shots.

UP NEXT
  • Methodist is on the road Saturday to visit Maryville (Tenn.) College in conference play at 2 p.m.
  • Pfeiffer welcomes conference foe William Peace Saturday at 7 p.m. to N.E. Lefko Field.
