Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hoerning Heroics Not Quite Enough

MARYVILLE, TENN.  Rylan Hoerning scored twice in the final five minutes of Methodist's USA South Athletic Conference men's soccer match at Maryville (Tenn.) College Saturday afternoon, but the freshman's heroic effort wasn't able to completely erase a three-goal deficit as the host Scots hung on for a 3-2 win over the upset-minded Monarchs.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Maryville def. Methodist, 3-2
Records: Methodist 3-10-1 (1-9-1 USA South), Maryville 10-5 (8-2)
Location: Maryville, Tenn.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Scots were playing defensive soccer late in the game with their three-goal cushion, but Hoerning had something else in mind, fighting through the packed-in defense and getting the Monarchs on the scoreboard with a header off a lofted pass from Zach Woolard.
  • Not even three minutes later Hoerning was at it again, cutting the deficit to just one with a goal from a Cameron Wilson assist.
  • A Lawson Lamm shot in the moments before the final horn was Methodist's last chance for an equalizer, but the attempt went over the crossbar to end the last-second threat.
  • Maryville opened the scoring in the 20th minute, but could have grown that advantage if not for the efforts of Methodist goalkeeper Cole Hupp who finished the half with seven saves.
  • Overall, the Scots put together a 17-6 shots advantage in the game, which included a 10-3 shots on goal edge.
  • Maryville was also able to create a disadvantage in numbers of set pieces, generating seven corner kick opportunities while holding the Monarchs to none.
