BEREA, Ky. Rylan Hoerning's goal in the 14th minute was the only score Sunday in Methodist's 1-0 USA South Athletic Conference men's soccer victory over host Berea College.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Berea, 1-0
Records: Methodist 4-10-1 (2-9-1 USA South), Berea 4-14 (1-11)
Location: BC Sports Complex; Berea, Ky.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hoerning's goal came off a great combination that began with a throw-in from the left touch line. The throw led Cameron Wilson down the line where he was able to then draw back, making his defender overcommit too deep, and serve up a cross toward the back post.
- Hoerning got up in the air over his defender and flicked a header down into the bottom, right corner for the eventual game-winning marker.
- Besides Hoerning's goal, the Monarchs easily had the better of the possession game through at least the first 30 minutes of the game. By the time the match reached its recess, Methodist had doubled up the Mountaineers in total shots, 10-5.
- By game's end, those figures had more than doubled as the Monarchs finished with a 20-7 shots advantage, which included a 5-1 shots on goal edge.
- The lead on the scoreboard almost doubled 15 minutes into second-half action. A Lawson Lamm shot on frame was blocked by a defender, and less than a minute later Trent Powell powered a shot on frame that Berea goalkeeper Noah DeHart needed to save.
- Six minutes later the Monarchs were again buzzing the Mountaineer goal, getting a shot from Collin Hinnant that drifted wide, and a minute later getting a shot on frame from Hudson Zeisman that DeHart came up with for another save.
