Greensboro Scores Late to Steal Win From Monarchs

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist men's soccer played host to visiting Greensboro College Tuesday evening, and the Pride used two late, second half goals to take the 2-1 win from underneath the Monarchs in USA South Athletic Conference action.

Lawson Lamm put the Monarchs ahead in the 36th minute and for nearly 40 minutes, it looked like Methodist would earn the victory. However, the Pride found the equalizer in the 76th minute then took the lead (and the game) with another goal in the 80th minute.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Greensboro def. Methodist, 2-1
Records: Methodist 3-7-1 (1-6-1 USA South), Greensboro 7-5-1 (5-2)
Location: Monarch SoccerPlex; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lamm made it look easy when he intercepted a Greensboro pass, made a defender freeze, and delivered the ball in goal from above the center line point.
  • Jordy Briceno scored the equalizer on a "give-and-go." Taking a free kick, Briceno passed short to Leo Vasconcelos who returned the pass to Briceno, who sent a shot into the far right of the net for a score.
  • Off of a corner kick, Christian Thomas' shot was deflected into the net by a Methodist defense for a crushing second Greensboro goal.
  • Despite the loss, Dylan Anderson delivered a "play of the game" moment when he charged at Thomas and came away with possession in the box after Thomas appeared to have a surefire goal that would have put the Pride up 3-1 late.
  • Anderson's save on a Briceno shot in the 14th minute was a thing of beauty as Briceno had delivered a rocket but Anderson was able to send it flying just above the crossbar.

STAT FACTS
  • The Monarchs held a 12-9 advantage in shots taken and a 6-5 lead in shots on target but the Pride's 11-2 edge in corner kicks was big for Greensboro.
  • Lamm's four shots and two on target led the team. Rylan Hoerning took two shots but neither were on frame.
  • Despite giving up a goal to Briceno, the Monarchs' defense performed well against the conference's third-leading (tied with eight) scorer. Methodist also held Darli Mihindou (also tied for third in goals scored in the conference) without a shot in the 15 minutes he played as a starter.

TOURNAMENT WATCH
With five conference matchups remaining (two at home), the Monarchs sit at sixth place in the East Division. To qualify for the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament, the Monarchs must procure a top-four seed in the division.

UP NEXT
  • Methodist takes on Averett University in Danville, Va. Saturday at 7 p.m. in conference action.
  • Greensboro welcomes Brevard College to Pride Field for the Pride's Senior Day Saturday at 4 p.m.
