Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Early Deficit, Monarch Rally, but Pfeiffer Victory

MISENHEIMER, N.C. They were down but not out, however the Monarchs weren't able to overcome a fast Pfeiffer University start in a 15-10 USA South Athletic Conference loss in men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.

Connor Glenn led the Methodist attack with four goals.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Pfeiffer def. Methodist, 15-10
Records: Methodist 6-5 (1-2 USA South), Pfeiffer 5-5 (3-0)
Location: Lefko Field; Misenheimer, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The host Falcons scored eight unanswered goals to start the game, a string that carried into the second quarter until broken by Methodist goals from Glenn and AJ Mejia.
  • The teams entered the halftime break with that 8-2 count up on the scoreboard.
  • Though the Falcons notched the first two markers coming out of recess, the Methodist attack finally got rolling as it found the back of the netting for four consecutive scores.
  • Bryce Kephart got things rolling, followed by back-to-back goals from Glenn. Hunter Vaughn added the last of the four, bringing the Monarchs within reach of the comeback, at 10-6, with just over two minutes left in the third quarter.
  • In between Glenn's second and Vaughn's goals were a pair of timely saves from Liam Von Hoene that allowed the momentum to remain on Methodist's bench.
  • The likely turn of the tide came shortly after Vaughn's score, however, as Pfeiffer finally got one past Von Hoene 30 seconds later, then added a back-breaker with 47 seconds remaining in the third frame.
  • Mejia opened the scoring in the fourth quarter, but the five-goal deficit proved too large to overcome.

STAT FACTS
  • Glenn's four goals tied for game-high honors.
  • Kephart added a three-point afternoon from a pair of goals and an assist.
  • Clay Stevenson started in goal for Methodist and made four saves, but took the loss to even his record at 1-1. Von Hoene finished off the game between the pipes and came away with six saves.
  • The Monarch outshot the Falcons in both the second (16-8) and fourth quarters (17-7), and finished the game with a 53-41 overall advantage in shots.
  • The Falcons nearly doubled Methodist in ground ball pick-ups, 39 to 20, and held the Monarchs to 0-for-4 in man-up opportunities.

UP NEXT
  • Methodist travels to Danville, Va., to take on Averett University on March 30 for a league contest against the Cougars.
