HOW IT HAPPENED
- The pivot points in the opening match against host MBU were late in the first set, and the second set as a whole.
- Trailing 20-15 in the first set, Methodist got on a 6-0 run to take the lead. Jeanana Fowler had a pair of kills in the run, Erica East had one, and Ellie Atkins dropped in three service aces.
- Mary Baldwin would halt the run with a side-out point, but the Monarchs scored four of the next five points -- capped by another Fowler kill -- to take the set.
- Fighting to stay in the match, the Fighting Squirrels lived up to their name in the second set, battling the Monarchs through 10 ties and four lead changes.
- Methodist opened on a 5-0 string, but MBU responded with a six-point run to take the lead.
- The Monarchs led late, 23-20, but MBU rallied to a set point with four unanswered. Methodist would fend off that point, but the Fighting Squirrels would twice more own a set point, each time, though, thwarted by a Monarch point.
- Tied at 28-28, Methodist earned a point on an MBU service error and would then clinch the set on a Geneva Barriger kill.
- Methodist never trailed in the third set, and used an 8-0 run through the middle of the set to earn the set, and match victory.
- The momentum from the win over MBU did not continue into the match with Southern Virginia. The Monarchs opened the first set with three points, but the Knights used several runs of at least three points to take command and take the set.
- Methodist fell behind 5-0 to start the second set, rallied with six straight when down 18-10, but SVU would again take command with a run of its own to go up 2-0 in the match.
- A 14-1 SVU surge when the match had been tied at 3-3 in the third was the fuel the Knights needed to finish off the set and match.
