Late Goal by Monarchs Not Enough in 2-1 Loss

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  After scoring a late second half goal, Methodist men's soccer could not score the equalizer in a 2-1 USA South Athletic Conference loss to Pfeiffer University under the lights Wednesday at Duggins Soccer Stadium.

Scoring the lone goal for the Monarchs was freshman Suwo Mavindidze. This was his first goal in his collegiate career.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Pfeiffer def. Methodist, 2-1
Records: Methodist 2-10-2 (0-5-1 USA South), Pfeiffer 6-7 (3-3)
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the first 61 minutes, Methodist keeper Cole Hupp stopped every shot he faced. In the 62nd minute though, Hupp faced a situation that would be difficult for any goalie to stop.
  • The Falcons ripped off three consecutive shots in the matter of second between each other. Hupp managed to save two of them but off the second save the ball bounced backwards on him, which gave Pfeiffer an open net to score the first goal.
  • The eventual game-winner for the Falcons came in the 87th minute, off a counter attack. The Monarchs had the ball in the attacking third with most of their players up to try to tie the match. The ball got loose and Pfeiffer would take advantage of the situation and capitalize.
  • Methodist got on the board two minutes later. A shot from Hudson Zeisman deflected off the Falcons keeper to where Mavindidze was standing to score the open netter.
NUMBERS
  • Pfeiffer's offense and control showed they were superior to the Monarchs. With 19 total shots and nine corner kicks compared to Methodist's six shots and five corners was a major factor.
  • With his seven saves tonight, Hupp has now saved at least six shots in the past three games.
NEXT UP
  • Methodist goes on the road for their regular season finale in a USA South game with Mary Baldwin University on Saturday at 3 PM.
  • Pfeiffer wraps up their USA South slate with a road contest with North Carolina Wesleyan University on Saturday at 2 PM.
