Baseball Is Back At Armstrong-Shelley

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist baseball opened its season for 2021 with a non-conference matchup against visiting North Carolina Wesleyan on Tuesday afternoon. Unfortunately, the Battling Bishops spoiled the Monarchs' home debut with a          9-2 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Two Methodist errors resulted in three of the first five N.C. Wesleyan runs to be unearned. The Battling Bishops added another four runs in the eighth and ninth as insurance.
  • Ryan Hill hit a booming double to right-center and Wesley Hall batted him in with a left field single to cut the deficit to 2-1 early in the game.
  • After N.C. Wesleyan put up three runs in the fourth, Methodist countered with one run in the fifth. Jordan Cassell scored Jacob Austin, after Austin reached second via a bunt single and a wild pitch.

STAT FACTS
  • Five Monarchs saw the mound on this staff day. Nathan Cockman and William St. Leger each had three strikeouts in two innings of work while Tyler Johnson needed 1.1 innings to earn his three punchouts. Starter Will Walker and Ryan Hill had a pair each. As a team, Methodist recorded 13 K's overall.
  • Austin and Cassell led the team with two hits each. Cassell also drew a walk. Hall, Hill, and Josh Lallo had a hit and a walk each.
  • Brad Pennington led the Bishops with three hits in five at-bats.
