HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both games contained fifth inning magic as the Monarchs used that inning to take leads. In Game 1, the Monarchs broke open a scoreless game with three runs and in the second game, Methodist scored four runs to take a 4-3 lead.
- In Game 2, Methodist exploded in the fifth and sixth innings, turning a 3-1 deficit into a 9-3 lead. Hollman, Yarbrough, and Dagenhart wreaked havoc as they were responsible for six of the eight runs scored in those two innings.
- Hollman, in particular, stole the show with a double in the fifth and then returning with a triple in the sixth.
- Methodist added three more runs in the eighth inning, taking advantage of three hits, which included a Jacob Austin triple, two wild pitches, and two hit-by-pitches.
- In the fifth inning of Game 1, a Lynchburg error resulted in runners in the corner and Rob Wilkerson delivered with an RBI-single, followed by an RBI-double from Wesley Hall. Another Hornets' error led to a Methodist run in the sixth for a final score of 3-0.
STAT FACTS
- Caldwell gets credited with the win after entering in the fifth of Game 1 and retiring the side, while Ryan Hill got his first save of the season by striking out four batters in the final two innings. The starter, Latta allowed just four singles over his four innings of work.
- Dagenhart led Game 2 with four hits in five at-bats. Hall and Yarbrough each had three hits and two RBIs in the second game. Austin and Wilkerson went 3-for-4 in Game 1. Yarbrough led the team with five steals between both games.
- Cassell hit his first collegiate homerun in the third inning of Game 2. That was also the team's first homer of the 2021 season.
- In addition to a season high in runs scored, Methodist logged new season-bests in hits (17) and extra-base hits (six).
- A combined 26 runners left stranded by Methodist kept both games much closer than indicated by the scores.
