HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarchs took control of the fourth set with a 6-1 run which turned a narrow 12-11 advantage into an 18-12 score. Granted, the Falcons did cut the deficit to 21-19 after four straight points, but the Monarchs ripped away any hopes of a fifth set with four unanswered points to win the match. A Hewett service ace set the Monarchs up with match point and a Pfeiffer attack error gave the Monarchs the match.
  • The first set was so tightly contested that the Monarchs needed 32 points to win the game. Methodist had to overcome an early 8-2 deficit. A Ryan kill tied the game at 11 and was the punctuation on a 7-1 Monarch run. Four consecutive points with Ryan and Megan Andrews alternating for the four kills gave the Monarchs a 22-20 lead and a ball-handling error gave Methodist the set point with the score at 24-21.
  • However, Pfeiffer rattled off three consecutive points to tie the set at 24. The Falcons had set point twice, including the 30-29 lead, but kills from East and Ryan reclaimed the lead for Methodist and a Pfeiffer attack error cemented the set.
  • Pfeiffer used a 7-0 run to take set No. 3. That run saw the Falcons erase a 17-13 deficit. A Ryan kill tied the game at 22 and a ball-handling error moved the Monarchs ahead but two Pfeiffer kills and a Methodist ball-handling error won the set for the Falcons.
  • The Monarchs simply dominated in the second set to rout the Falcons, 25-10. The highlights were Geneva Barriger's three straight kills at the end of a 6-0 run and the Monarchs taking the last nine points to win the set. Methodist had 16 kills to just one error and a hitting percentage of .484.
