FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. The Monarchs overcame a 7-2 deficit against visiting Oglethorpe University for a 12-11 non-conference victory in men's lacrosse Saturday afternoon.
Methodist scored five consecutive goals in the second quarter to tie the game at 7-7.
Hunter Vaughan was instrumental with three straight goals in the frame and
Matt Pemberton had a hand in five of the first seven scores. With 7:01 on the clock in the third quarter,
Jesse Leyble gave the Monarchs their first lead (9-8) with his only goal of the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED.
- Mark Chatt broke a 10-10 tie with nine minutes on the clock. Chatt recovered the ground ball following an Oglethorpe turnover and beat the defender and the goalkeeper for the score. Less than a minute later, Chatt found Carter Favreau for another score in a man-up situation.
- The third quarter featured pivotal goals from Vaughan, Leyble, and Pemberton. Vaughan tied it (with an assist from Pemberton), Leyble's was the go-ahead, and Pemberton regained the lead for a 10-9 score.
- Oglethorpe stormed out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first quarter, including two goals in man-up situations. The first quarter ended with the Stormy Petrels leading 6-2 and they scored the opening goal of the second period. Brian Green scored three of their first six goals. With 2:22 remaining in the game, Green's goal made it a one-score game.

- Pemberton finished with two goals and five assists while Vaughan had four goals. Chatt (two goals and an assist) and Leyble (one goal and two assists) were the other Monarchs were multiple points.
- Tyler Bennett had a team-high seven ground balls and won 8-of-16 faceoffs. Chatt recovered six ground balls, in addition to two caused turnovers.
- Methodist outshot Oglethorpe, 42-27, including a 25-16 edge on shots on target. The Methodist defense, in particular, clamped down in the second half, holding the Petrels to just eight shots and three on goal.
- 27 turnovers doomed Oglethorpe as the Monarchs had just 18.
