SWEET BRIAR, Va. Methodist's women's tennis team got the ball rolling on the 2021-22 season with a weekend trip to Sweet Briar College for the 2021 Battle of the Blue Ridge.
Players from Methodist, Brevard College, University of Lynchburg, Piedmont University, Shenandoah College and the host Vixens competed in four flights of singles competition and three doubles flights on Saturday and Sunday.
Megan Kidd and
Alex Pratt earned Round 1 wins in the Singles 2 Flight, and the tandems of
Abby Caddick and
Sydni Lewis, and
Jill Lawrence and Kidd earned Round 1 wins in the Doubles 1 Flight.
Kidd won a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Rachel Marsh of Piedmont, while Pratt also won in two sets, downing Ariella Stepleman of Shenandoah, 3 and 2.
The doubles victory (8-5) by Caddick and Lewis cam against Marsh and Benham of Piedmont, and the Kidd, Lawrence pairing picked up an 8-4 victory over Sweet Briar's Maria Caro and Isabela Guilarte.
Though relegated to the consolation side of the brackets after Round 1, several Monarchs were able to advance to the consolation bracket quarterfinals (most of which were not played) with wins.

- Mines/Veva Willocks def. Evan/Perry (Piedmont), 8-4 (Doubles-2)
UP NEXT
The Monarchs will host their annual MU Women's Fall Invite on Sept. 17-19 at the Clayton Tennis Center. Participating teams will be Averett University, Barton College, Meredith College, N.C. Wesleyan College, University of Mount Olive, and USC-Sumter.
