ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. Methodist volleyball twice rallied from a set down, the second time staving off a North Carolina Wesleyan College victory, but the host Battling Bishops were able to finally overcome the challenge by the Monarchs in a 3-2 USA South Athletic Conference home victory Tuesday evening at Everett Gym.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: N.C. Wesleyan def. Methodist, 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 25-19, 17-25, 15-9)
Records: Methodist 8-8 (0-4 USA So.), N.C. Wesleyan 11-4 (3-1)
Location: Everett Gym; Rocky Mount, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Though Methodist dropped the opening set, it did force three lead changes and forged a tie score on seven occasions.
- Erica East led the way for Methodist in the second set, knocking down six kills -- without an attack error -- to pull the Monarchs even at a set apiece. A 6-0 run when trailing 14-12 did the trick as Methodist never trailed again. Leeann Sessoms registered the set-winning kill.
- The Bishops and Monarchs were all square nine times in the third set, which also had four lead changes, but it was a final run by NCW that sealed the set victory. Jeanana Fowler pasted a kill to bring Methodist to within a point at 20-19, only to have the Bishops reel off the final five points to edge to the brink of match victory.
- The Monarchs weren't going to go easily, however. Fighting off defeat in the fourth set, they trailed only once -- after the opening point -- using a 4-0 string to take the lead, and later a 3-0 run to build an 18-12 cushion they would then finish off to even the match once more.
- The deciding fifth leaned N.C. Wesleyan's way from its opening two points. Methodist was within one point twice early on, but never were closer than three points the rest of the way as the host team closed out the set, and the match.
MORE TO IT
- East was a beast on the attack for Methodist, not just leading the Monarchs with 14 kills but also finishing the match with just two attack errors and a career-best .462 attack percentage.
- Fowler and Kendall Craig also reached double digits in kills, each with 11.
- Both Janie Harmelink and Hannah Hewett reached double figures in digs, with Harmelink coming up with 19 and Hewett adding 15. Hewett also dished out 44 set assists.
- The Bishops' strong suit on the night was a solid attack that finished at .241 during the victory. In each of their winning sets they eclipsed the 30% mark, succeeding at a .406 rate in the opening set, .355 in the third set, and .308 in the deciding fifth.
