Bullins Breaks School Record in Loss to Huntingdon

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist football team was celebrating homecoming weekend on Saturday in an afternoon USA South Athletic Conference contest with nationally ranked No. 21 Huntingdon College. This exciting game came down to the wire as the Hawks defeated the Monarchs 38-35 in Monarch Stadium.

In the loss, starting quarterback Brandon Bullins broke the school record for career completions. The career number was 663 by Methodist great Max Reber and Bullins was just two passes away from tying. Completed pass number three came on the first Monarch touchdown to Kobe Praylow.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Huntingdon def. Methodist, 38-35
Records: Methodist 3-5 (2-3 USA South), Huntingdon 6-1 (4-0)
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game started off with the Monarchs winning the coin toss and elected to receive. On the opening kickoff Praylow fumbled the ball and James Cheatham of Huntingdon recovered. Three plays later, the Hawks were up 7-0 following a Landon Cotney 34-yard touchdown pass to Conner Bradford.
  • On Methodist's first official drive, the Monarchs mainly moved down the field through the passing game. Bullins completed pass to Mikhail Baldwin and De'Marion Calloway, for 27- and 19-yards respectively, to get the team just right outside the red zone. The next pass was Bullins record-breaking pass to Praylow for a touchdown from 23 yards out.
  • Methodist took their first lead of the game, 14-7, on their next possession. Backed up at their own 15-yard line, a Keyshaun Pete run of 14 yards gave the Monarchs some space. A couple of almost 20-yard passes to Calloway and Praylow got the offense to the 26-yard line of Huntingdon. After a good gain of 11 yards on a Bullins keeper, Tobias Johnson Jr. was the next recipient of a Bullins throw and this one would be for a 16-yard score.
  • The Hawks made it a four-point game after a Will Edwards 27-yard field goal to begin the second quarter. Methodist though made it a two-score contest again after Bullins hooked up with A'Jani Mainer on a 75 yard catch and run for a touchdown to make it 21-10.
  • Huntingdon responded right back and them some on their next two possessions. First Cotney found an open Kyler Chaney at the goal line for a 4-yard score, then Cotney would keep the ball himself and run it in from the same distance as the previous touchdown. What was a 21-10 Methodist advantage turned into a 24-21 lead for the Hawks in an eight-minute span.
  • Right before halftime the Monarchs got in a position to knot up the score. Methodist sent out Trevor Hargett for a 21-yard field goal but he would miss the kick wide left.
  • Huntingdon came out in the second half and made it a 17-point difference, 38-21. Cotney connected with Corey Brown from 19-yards out for the touchdown before a 55-yard pass from Cotney to Bradford.
  • Bullins gave the Monarch faithful hope that Methodist was still in the game at the 14:00 minute mark of the fourth quarter. On two separate occasions Bullins completed passes of 49 yards for touchdowns, one to Mainer and one to Johnson Jr., to get them within three of the lead.
  • Twice after getting that close to the score, the Monarchs were given opportunities to either tie or take back the lead. The first came on a miss Edwards field goal to spot the ensuing Methodist drive at their own 20-yard line, and the other off a DeIrvin Grate interception at the Monarch's 16-yard line. Once they had to punt the ball away and the other was a turnover on downs following a failed fourth down conversion.
  • Methodist had a chance to get the ball back one last time late in the fourth. With 2:40 left, the Hawks had the ball on a 4th and one at the Monarchs 28-yard line and Methodist had just called their final timeout of the game. Huntingdon sent the offense back onto the field to see if they could get the first down. The Hawks did convert the down to seal the victory.
MORE TO IT
  • Both quarterbacks finished the game with exactly 20 completions for over 350 yards passing and four or more touchdowns.
  • Two Monarch receivers had over 120 receiving yards, Praylow and Mainer. Praylow led the way with 126 and a score, while Mainer was just two yards (124) behind him but had two touchdowns, the first two of his college career.
  • Josh Hill led all defensive players with a career-high 10 tackles (5 solo, 5 assisted). Roderic Christian Jr. sat right after Hill with nine tackles and Grate had a great game with six tackles (all solo), three pass break-ups, and an interception.
