Keyshaun Pete Runs All Over Knights in Victory

BUENA VISTA, Va.  On Saturday afternoon, Methodist football team played a road USA South Athletic Conference game against Southern Virginia University. Even though the Monarchs were shutout in the third quarter, they were still able to defeat the Knights 36-23 in Knight Stadium.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Southern Virginia, 36-23
Records: Methodist 4-5 (3-3 USA South), Southern Virginia 0-8 (0-5)
Location: Knight Stadium; Buena Vista, Virginia

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was less than three minutes after the opening kickoff and Methodist was able to score first, an 11-yard rushing touchdown by Keyshaun Pete but the team missed the point after touchdown. With pretty good field position from the kickoff, the running back duo of Pete and Tyquan Eaddy got the Monarchs in SVU territory. A 31-yard pass from Brandon Bullins to A'Jani Mainer spotted the ball at the Knights 11-yard line before Pete took care of the rest.
  • SVU responded back quickly with a Cade Nelson rushing touchdown from two yards out on the ensuing possession, 7-6. Twice Knights quarterback Colten Shumway connected with Jire Washington for a total of 49 yards to put them just outside Methodist red zone. The ball was handed off to Nelson three of the next four plays, including a 13-yard rush to the two-yard line, and found the end zone.
  • The Monarchs took the lead back, 9-7, in the first quarter thanks to a 26-yard field goal by Trevor Hargett. On this drive, Bullins hooked up with Mainer again for 23 yards to get Methodist deep into SVU's side. Bullins than found Kobe Praylow a couple of times for 21 yards to spot the ball in the Knights red zone. A penalty though was what forced the Monarchs to kick the field goal.
  • Following a Shumway interception by DaQuinton Grady of Methodist, the Monarchs got the ball back at their own three-yard line. Methodist marched down pretty much the length of the field, on 11 plays, before Bullins threw a 29-yard pass to Praylow for the touchdown to make it 16-7. During that possession, Eaddy had two big runs of 16- and 11-yards to help the Monarchs.
  • The next minute saw both teams scoring a touchdown. First SVU cut it down to a two-point game with a 74-yard touchdown pass from Shumway to Washington. A few plays later, KJ Hicklen was on the receiving end of a Bullins 34-yard touchdown. The PAT attempt by Methodist was blocked by the Knights to keep it within one score, 22-14.
  • Before halftime, SVU made it 22-17 with a 19-yard field goal by Jackson Burbidge.
  • The only points of the third quarter came off a Bullins interception. The Knights picked the ball off in Monarch territory and returned it 17 yards before being stopped at Methodist 13-yard line. The next play, Jacob Wood ran the ball in for the touchdown. SVU would go for the two-point conversion afterwards but failed to convert, making it 23-22.
  • In the fourth quarter, the Monarchs got the ball near midfield off a Knights punt for pretty good starting field position. Runs of 17 and 38 yards by Pete spotted the ball at SVU's two-yard line. Two plays later, Pete plunges into the end zone followed by Pete catching a pass from Eaddy on a two-point conversion attempt, 30-23.
  • Pete ran into the end zone for a third time in this one, his second of the quarter. With Methodist back at their own 11-yard line, Praylow gave the offense more breathing room with a catch and run of 37 yards to get to about the 50-yard line. Eventually Pete caught a pass of 28 yards to get the Monarchs down to the Knights eight-yard line. The next play saw Pete run it in, and with the PAT blocked again, to make the score 36-23.
  • SVU tried to run their hurry up offense to get a quick score to give themselves one last chance. DeIrvin Grate of that Methodist defense put a stop to it by intercepting the ball to allow the Monarchs to run out the clock.
MORE TO IT
  • Methodist rushed for a season-high 282 yards as a team. Leading the way was Pete with a career-high 226 yards and three touchdowns, which matches a career-high.
  • The Monarch offense nearly out gained the Knights by 200 more yards, 569 to 385. Along with their rushing numbers, Methodist also threw the ball for 287 yards.
  • On defense, Roderic Christian Jr. led the game with 15 tackles, seven solo and eight assisted, and he was not the only one with double-digit tackles as Alex Boyd (10) was up there as well. Boyd also led the team with one and half sacks.
