Box Score ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.  Methodist men's soccer team broke a six-game losing streak against North Carolina Wesleyan University on Wednesday afternoon. The Monarchs took down the Battling Bishops 2-0, on the road, in a USA South Athletic Conference game on Scalf Field.

The previous time Methodist claimed a victory over N.C. Wesleyan was back in 2015, when the Monarchs won 6-0 on their home pitch. You have to go back to 2012 for the last Methodist defeated the Battling Bishops on the road, a 2-1 affair.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. N.C. Wesleyan, 2-0
Records: Methodist 6-1-3 (2-0 USA So.), N.C. Wesleyan 4-5-1 (1-1)
Location: Scalf Field; Rocky Mount, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the 13th minute of the match, the Monarchs struck first with a goal by Sean Laney (the first of his collegiate career). Christopher Shoffler had the ball on one side of the pitch and crossed it to the other side to an open Hudson Zeisman. Zeisman would then one tap it to Laney to put it into the net.
  • The score, 1-0, remained the same heading into the halftime break
  • Just about five minutes into the second half, Methodist doubled their score to make it 2-0. With the ball in the possession of David Ospina just out on the side the 18-yard box, Ospina sent the ball toward the front of the goal. Running to the net was Shoffler and with a diving effort his leg got enough of the ball to knock it in.
NUMBERS
  • The impressive showing of goalie Matthew Walker continues in his first season. In five matches (450 minutes), the freshman has only allowed one goal and has a 4-0-1 record with all four of his wins being shutouts.
  • A somewhat physical game by the two schools. Each side committed 12 total fouls but the second half saw majority of them as the Monarchs had nine and N.C. Wesleyan 10.
NEXT UP
  • Methodist stays on the road for a night USA South game on Saturday against host Pfeiffer University with a 7 PM start time.
  • N.C. Wesleyan is also back in action Saturday with a home USA South contest versus Southern Virginia University at 4 PM.
