FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. The match between Methodist men's soccer and Southern Virginia University on Tuesday afternoon was thrilling and intense. This is expected in a USA South Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament game, where the host Monarchs had to take the Knights into overtime to come out victorious, 4-3, at Duggins Soccer Stadium.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Brevard, 4-3 (overtime)
Records: Methodist 9-2-5, Southern Virginia 2-12-3
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium, Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first goal of the match was scored by Hudson Zeisman of Methodist, in the 23rd minute. Prior to Zeisman goal, Christopher Shoffler took a shot himself at the net but was saved. The goalie did not secure the ball though and Zeisman was right there off the deflection.
- Southern Virginia's own Reed Robertson would tie the match in the 37th minute before heading into the halftime break.
- Just 43 seconds into the second half, each side would register a goal to keep it tied at 2-2. First Luke Hemenway scored off a corner kick pass from Calum Yule to put the Knights up but Zeisman of the Monarchs knotted it up again with his second goal of the contest.
- Some confusing on the back line led to SVU's Robertson scoring his second goal in the 59th minute. Ammon Lewis corralled a loose ball before dishing off to Robertson for the one timer.
- Both the game-tying and game-winning goals for Methodist came off the foot of Casey Atwell. He first tied the match in the 86th minute to force overtime before scoring again in the 94th minute, after receiving a pass from Ryan Rivera.
STAT FACTS
- Due to the new NCAA rules, only matches in postseason play (i.e. conference tournaments/NCAA tournaments) can go into overtime. In OT, the teams must play two 10-minute halves and there is no golden goal (meaning first team to score in extra time wins the game).
- The Monarchs outshot the Knights by a gross amount in the game. Methodist registered a total of 37 shots, with 17 on target, compared to the 11 shots, four on net, by SVU.
