Wilkerson's Two-Run Homer Gave Monarchs the Win Over Lions

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  On the first day of the Armstrong Invitational, Methodist baseball scored eight runs in the sixth and seventh innings to overtake the visiting Penn State University Abington Lions for an 8-6 win in non-conference play Friday afternoon at Armstrong-Shelley Field.

Rob Wilkerson's homerun over right field in the bottom of the seventh brought in two runs for the Monarchs to give Methodist a two-run lead over the Lions. The Monarchs were able to hold off the Lions in the final innings as Tanner Freeland earned his first save in his season debut.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Abington, 8-6
Records: Methodist 4-2, Abington 2-1
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a slow start for both teams, taking a few innings for the action to get rolling. Abington scored their first run in the top of the third after scoring on a pass ball.
  • The Lions went ahead 4-0 in the sixth inning after hitting a deep ball into left center to send two runner's home. The bats came alive for Methodist in their next at bats, as Spencer Nelson smacked one to the center field fence to make it 4-4.
  • The next inning was the same for the Monarchs, as they added four more runs to the board. The first from a single by Stancil Bowles down the right field line to get Nelson home. Bowles then made it to third off a base hit by Gavin Wheeler and in the next play finessed his way home in what was supposed to be a suicide squeeze but turned into a run down, avoiding the catchers' tag to land a hand on home plate. The final two runs jogged in from Wilkerson's homerun.
  • Brandon Humphreys came in for Austin Skipper at the start of the seventh inning and limited Abington to only two runs before Freeland came in to relieve and lock down the two-run win over Abington.
STAT FACTS
  • Wheeler led the team with three hits and two runs batted in as Jacob Austin, Wilkerson, Nelson, and Bowles followed with two hits.
  • Freeland allowed one hit and registered two strikeouts in the 1.1 innings pitched. Humphreys secured his second win and Freeland tallied his first save for the season.
