Bennett Breaks Two Single-Game Records in Win Over Pacers

RALEIGH, N.C.  Methodist men's lacrosse got a near scare at the end but managed to hang onto their 17-16 victory over USA South Athletic Conference opponent William Peace University on Wednesday evening in WakeMed Park.

A large part of the win is thanks to Tyler Bennett at the faceoff X. He won the Monarchs possession a new single-game record 21 times out of 30 attempts. That was also not the only way Bennett contributed to the team. Throughout the contest was he able to corral 18 ground balls as well, which is another single-game program record.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. William Peace, 17-16
Records: Methodist 8-7 (3-4 USA South); William Peace 7-5 (3-3)

HOW IT HAPPENED.
  • The first goal of the day belong to Jake Bandler of Methodist, but about three minutes later the Pacers tallied two quick scores 15 seconds apart. The Monarch would first tie the game before taking the lead on a J.R. Newman goal, and this was a special one as this was the freshman's first collegiate goal.
  • After William Peace answered back with three consecutive scores, the Monarchs made three straight goals themselves to go up 6-5. The Pacers took an eventual 8-7 advantage into the locker room as they were able to put it past the keeper three more time to Methodist's one timer, in the final five minutes.
  • Just about a minute into the second half, William Peace went up by two scores until the Monarchs stormed back and reclaimed the lead 10-9 with 8:20 left in the third quarter. In the closing seconds of the period, the Pacers would go back up by one again, 12-11, heading into the final stanza.
  • Jesse Leyble started and ended a Methodist five goal streak to start off the fourth to go up 16-12. With 5:49 left in the contest, Cy Horner received a pass from Bandler and register the most important goal of the game, the eventual game-winner, to make it 17-13. William Peace made things interesting by getting within one with 1:49 left but could not force overtime.
MORE NUMBERS.
  • Both teams were shot happy today as a total of 104 shots were taken, 54 by the Pacers and 50 by the Monarchs. Though Methodist generated more attempts on net, 28, to William Peace, 25.
  • Even though Bennett had a big day getting those ground balls, the Pacers were still able to obtain more possessions by scooping up the ball 11 more times over the Monarchs, 58-47.
  • As it's been all season, Methodist has trouble with turnovers. The Monarchs turned the ball over 24 times.
