Tough Day for the Monarchs on Senior Day

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist men's lacrosse did not have the turnout that they hoped for on senior day as the team experienced a 15-13 upset to USA South opponent, LaGrange College on Saturday afternoon.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: LaGrange def. Methodist, 15-13
Records: Methodist 8-8 (3-5 USA South); LaGrange 7-8 (4-4)
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED.
  • Senior Matt Pemberton scored the first goal for the Monarchs, followed by Jesse Leyble with the team's second goal to put Methodist up 2-0 in the first four minutes.
  • It was not long before the Panthers returned the call with two goals to tie the game at two all. The game was tied back up at three all before LaGrange would keep the lead throughout the rest of the game.
  • In the second quarter, Jake Bandler went coast to coast, finessing his way through the defenders to score his first goal of the game, closing LaGrange's lead to one (6-5).
  • The panthers stretched their lead and ended the first half up 11-6.
  • After going flat between the second and third quarters, the Monarchs found some momentum late in the fourth, fighting back with three goals in the final nine minutes of play.
  • The defense held LaGrange to no more goals while seniors Hunter Vaughan and Pemberton scored their last goals of their senior day.
  • In the final seconds of play, Ryan Kavounis threw in a goal at the horn, scoring the final goal of the game.
  • With not enough time left in the game, the three goal comeback that closed LaGrange's lead to two was not enough to put the Monarchs back on top, resulting in a 15-13 loss for Methodist.
 MORE NUMBERS.
  • LaGrange won of the face-off end, winning 19 to Methodist's 12.
  • Cy Horner had a tough day on offense as he only registered two goals from the 11 shots taken, not buying any goals from the four times that his shots hit the crossbar.
  • Jackson Bulkin subbed in as goalie during the second quarter and finished the game with 11 saves and only allowed four goals.
  • Pemberton led the team with three goals followed by twos across the board from five other Monarchs with Bandler, a long-stick midfielder recording a career-high.
  • LaGrange had three players score four goals each on the day while their face off player recorded a team high 12 ground balls.
