FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. The Methodist women's tennis team on Friday afternoon welcomed Averett University, Barton College, Meredith College, North Carolina Wesleyan University, and University of Mount Olive to the Gene Clayton Tennis Center for the 2022 MU Women's Fall Invite. The first day of this three-day event started off with doubles matches, which saw some great success by the Monarchs.
The matches in the Doubles Flight 3 were played in a round robin style, than a traditional bracket. From this flight Methodist had a trio of players claim the 1
st place title in
Sydney Bird,
Veva Willocks, and
Erin Mines. Bird and Willocks went a perfect 3-0 while Mines played in two matches and was on the winning side both times (placing was based off win/loss percentage).
Bird and Willocks were partners for two of the three and won those matches 8-1. For their third victories, Bird teamed up with
Milana Lewis to beat a Meredith team 8-4 while the combo of Willocks and Mines took down another Avenging Angels pair 8-2. Mines other win was with
Hannah Higgins that saw an 8-4 score.
In the same flight, Higgins and Lewis finished in a tie for second place after going 1-1 on the day. Their lone loss on the day came when the two partnered up and fell in a close 8-5 match.
The teams of
Toni Laney/
Luciana Forma and
Megan Kidd/
Valeria Matute had the exact same type of days by going 2-1. Both team dropped their opening match though Kidd and Matute challenged their opponent by forcing a tie breaker (14-12) that ultimately saw them fall 8-7.
The last Monarch duo was
Cailin Cifra and
Kamdyn Balko who did not have the greatest success by only winning one of their three matches.
